Mrs Carol Lane qualified in Medicine at Southampton University in 1978. She worked in Oxford as an SHO in oncology, endocrinology and chest disease, before moving on to her first post in Ophthalmology at the Middlesex Hospital.
Residency in Ophthalmology, including orbital and lacrimal surgery at Moorfields Eye Hospital, was followed by appointment as Fellow to Mr Richard Collin, specializing in oculoplastic surgery. An MRC Training Fellowship for research into transplantation of the retinal pigment epithelium resulted in a thesis and the degree of Doctor of Medicine from Southampton University in 1991.
Carol was awarded Fellowship of the Royal College of Surgeons in 1983 and Fellowship of the Royal College of Ophthalmologists at its foundation in 1988. She was appointed as Consultant Ophthalmologist at the University Hospital of Wales in 1989 and has lead a specialist service in oculoplastic, lacrimal and orbital surgery for the last 17 years. In the past 15 years she has run a joint endocrinology and ophthalmology service for the management of Graves' orbitopathy. Since 2001 she has also worked as a consultant at the Princess of Wales Hospital in Bridgend. She was elected Fellow of the Royal College of Physicians (UK) in 1999.
She organized undergraduate teaching in ophthalmology for many years and has until recently been Director of the All Wales Training Programme in Ophthalmology. She teaches on the Annual Salisbury Oculoplastic Course, has run orbital anatomy courses in Cardiff University and has been part of the Faculty in Oculoplastic Surgery for Orbis, the flying eye hospital. She has 45 publications in refereed journals and has contributed 2 book chapters.
Carol Lane is a founder member of BOPSS, a past president of the South Western Ophthalmological Society, a member of ESOPRS and a member of EUGOGO.
